The talent pool is down again this year, and many of the top guys won't be around for the fall due to injury and rest.

"WELL HERE IT GOES #100"

'WOW
I really think you need to get out more  Shocked
I have been around baseball alot lately this past year and the upcoming one I am really looking forward too.
I have seen so many good kids playing, pitchers well in the 90’s and hitters that can turn that 90 around.
I have been to the JO, under armor, and the 4 corners tourneys and I seen plenty of good talent.
“Oh and just as a side note just because there not from Phoenix doesn’t mean there not there.” Wink

Even more bizarre than trying to pitch at age 63, is actually throwing 5 1/3 and getting the win.

It's all about balance -- balancing the school, baseball and personal life, and having realistic expectations. Our son played football every fall for four years, baseball in spring & summer, also participated in football conditioning and passing leagues. He was (and still is) an honor student, and still found time to go back to the midwest every summer for visits with the grandparents. He was recruited for both baseball and football, and is now in his third year of college baseball at a well respected program. It can be done.

Personally (in hindsight I might add) I would say Summer is the best time to take off, its to hot to play and certainly to hot to enjoy sitting there watching games, Spring is HS ball, Fall is enjoyable, productive scout ball, winter is also not only comfortable to play in but good camps, opportunities, this is where we can get our jump on the north and east coast players.
IMO If I could do it over, I would have bought my son a good sleeping bag and fishing pole and sent him back to his grandparents house in Ohio for the summer. I don't see where it would have changed his baseball future at all, and I know he would agree.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a good plan. Except when the voluntary workouts aren't exactly voluntary. Suggestions from a HC to attend carry a lot of weight.

I would not participate in high school workouts in Nov through January unless I were a marginal player fighting to make the team. If I were a high profile player, I would do all of the high profile scout stuff/college stuff in Sept and Oct.

High school stuff that takes place in Sept and Oct would have my full participation, and, again, Jan would be I time I would use to prepare for Feb, primarily to get me arm in shape regardless of position, and to work on hitting.

AZ observer,
Our school has voluntary workouts and scrimmages starting in November. I like to call them the pretryout, tryouts. Skipping them is dangerous to your HS career. Do you skip your HS workouts or your showcases in the fall? Not much choice around here and we aren't an exception. There is literally 9 months out of the year that a kid is expected to be at HS functions. The only time off is July, half of August and a couple of weeks here and there. Do you think it would be better to play fall ball or skip HS workouts? A lot of kids do both and that is a a bad idea in my book.

Danbam:

As I tried to indicate above that is actually a relatively easy question you ask:

Shut down in November and December. January is mostly in preparation to begin serious work in February -- so there are nearly three months off there. Also, shut down all or most of August and half of September. That's a very healthy and productive schedule. These guys are not as fragile as some think -- and sometimes lack of proper work will lead to injury.

But, again, it is a person decision. I just don't think -- for most players who want a serious opportunity -- that the fall is optional. It is a necessity and can carry with it the most meaningful opportunities, particularly for pitchers. Even pitchers with significant college opportunities can really get on the draft radar with a strong fall.
