Hamilton Takes Extra-Inning Win over Chaparral

Hamilton persevered through seven innings against Chaparral before putting together five hits – including two bunt singles – and five runs in the eighth to take a hard-fought 8-4 victory over the Firebirds in a Horizon Big League Dugout Invitational Tournament game at Chaparral. Although the result was dramatic, it was also anticlimactic, as both teams advanced to the semifinals of the nationally acclaimed event today at Horizon. Hamilton plays Brophy at 9:30 a.m., and Chaparral faces Horizon at 12:30. The winners meet at 7:30 p.m. for the championship. The win kept Hamilton undefeated at 10-0 while Chaparral fell to 5-6. The Firebirds have lost three games by a single run and three on their opponent’s final at bat.

Preston Hill had come in for Chaparral in the fourth and shut down the hard-hitting Huskies for four innings, allowing only one hit, before Ryan Casillas opened the eighth with a single. Tyler Kem reached on a bunt before Jorge Flores lined a two-strike double off the left-field wall to bring in Casillas. Connor Harris knocked in a second run with another bunt single and Aaron Hardenberg singled to center to make it 6-3 before Trent Hardenberg reached on an error that brought in another run and Justin Rosales closed out the scoring with a sacrifice to center.

Chaparral tried to rally with hard-hit singles by Jordan Weymouth and Trey Ford, but fell short after a double play and an over-the head catch in right by Aaron Hardenberg on a ball hit deep by Aaron Levy. Hardenberg had made a similar catch with two outs in the sixth on another ball hit by Levy to prevent what could have turned out to be the winning run for the Firebirds, who stranded Weymouth on third. Chaparral Gets Big Win over Cactus

When Will Abram entered the game for Chaparral on Wednesday afternoon against Cactus, the Firebirds were in trouble. Cactus had just scored five runs as seven batters combined for six hits. Michael Vaughn was on second base with just one out after a two-run double, and the Cobras suddenly had the momentum in a 5-5 game. Abram, a junior lefty with the savvy and stuff of a professional pitcher like, say, Jamie Moyer of the Philadelphia Phillies, got the next two hitters on a strike out and a routine fly ball and that was that.

Chaparral rallied for two runs in its half of the third and by the time it was over, Abram was perfect, retiring all 14 hitters he faced and striking out five, including all three in the seventh. The Firebirds, now 3-4, left the field with an important 8-5 victory over one of this season’s strongest Class 4A-1 opponents and a team that will be a force in the state playoffs. Cactus had defeated Tucson power Canyon Del Oro, 2-1 in eight innings, the day before and had come into the game undefeated. The Cobras did not come even close to a hit off Abram.

Sophomore first baseman Joey Bielek, who had a double, triple and four RBIs on the day, delivered the decisive blow with a two-run double to the right-field gap in the third. The Firebirds added an insurance run on a double to deep center by senior outfielder Jack Diamond, who contributed two hits and two RBIs. Junior right fielder Aaron Levy also had two hits for Chaparral.

The Firebirds had taken the early lead with a five-run second on hits by Levy, junior center fielder Joel Hayden and a two-run triple down the right field line by Bielek. Cactus got right back in it on five consecutive hits by Andrew Walter (a two-strike double), Schuyler Maestas (a single), Austin Brunke (an RBI single), Colton Vaughn (a bunt single) and Eric Goetz (a two-run single to the right side) before Michael Vaughn tied it with his double.
