March 21, 2008

Tucson Sahuaro rallied for 3 runs in the seventh inning to take a 3-1 victory over Desert Ridge in the championship game of the victory classic. Travis Helfrich had the game winner, a 2 RBI double after and RBI base hit to tie the score by Brandon McCollum. For Ridge, Travis Flores would be charged with the tough loss despite scattering only 9 hits in his 6 1/3 innings of work.


Chandler outslugged Desert Mountain 13-11 in the final game of the Mesquite/Skyline tournament. Jordan Oliva homered twice, including a grand slam in the fifth inning to break a 6-6 tie, as the two teams combined for 30 hits. Jose Brackamonte (3-4, 2B), Darian Johnson (2-5, RBI, R), Michael Handel (3-4, BB, R, 2B), Tim Barraza (2-4, 2R, RBI), MacKenzie Handel (3-4, 2R, 2 RBI) and Oliva (5 RBI) led Chandler. Desert Mountain was led by Taylor Lindsey (2-3, 2BB, R), Lars Liguori (1-2, 3 BB, 3 R), Kyle Smith (2-4, 3 RBI double), Riley Welch (2-4, R), Bryce Hashimoto (2-3, BB, 2R), and Lance Harper (2-run pinch home run).


Mesa broke a four game losing streak in the Hawk Triple Play Tournament by beating the Panthers from Putnam, OK 15-0. Senior Scott Valdez threw a gem, with a 3 hit shut out. Junior Chris Wert was huge at the plate with 2 bombs for 4 RBIs. Senior Trey Paulsen continued his hot hitting going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles. Also having a good day for the Jackrabbits was senior catcher Dillon Downs who was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs, Downs has also been fantastic behind the plate, catching every inning for Mesa this year.
 


Arcadia beat Seton Catholic 11-4, Chris Murphy was 3-3 plus a walk, two home
runs (3 on the year) and a double, scored 4 times and had 3 RBI's. Hank Yates added a pair of doubles for the Titans.


Corona del Sol continued to drive the ball in the gap, beating North Canyon 16 to 8.  It was a hitters park with over 30 hits in the game between both teams.  Kevin Collinge got his third win of the season.  For Corona, Trevor Allen was 4/5 (HR, 2B, 4RBI), Aaron Foshie 3/4 (2B), Mike Felton 3/5, Justin Klett 2/3 (HR, 3 RBI), Jason Fickett 2/2 (2B) and Chris Lopez 2/3 (2B).


Pinnacle remained unbeaten (3-0) in the “Best of the West” tournament defeating Ironwood 9-1. Freshman Steven Casey pitched a complete 4-hit game yielding only 1 unearned run with 5 K’s. Bryan Karraker stayed hot going 4-4 with a triple and three base hits.


 Queen Creek hosted the Moon Valley Rockets and won, 11-1. Sophomore Matt Schmit threw a 2-hitter, giving up one earned run while getting 5 Ks through 6 innings. Juniors Josh Fultz (2B, 3 runs and 3 rbi) and Eddie Malone (2B, 3B, 3 runs and 2 rbi) both went 3-4. Queen Creek stands at 7-10 overall and 1-0 in region.
 


Mesquite dropped Basha 4-3 with Ty Forneygoing 2-3 with a homer. Brian Newman earned the win on the mound.

Hamilton got long flies from Kyle Peterson and Justin Rosales to lead the way to a 9-1 win over Rocky Mtn of Coloradao. Matt Helm allowed only 3 hits in his 6 innings of work.

The Huskies advanced to the semi-finals of the Cleats tournament where they will play Bishop Gorman (NV) today.


Nathaniel Mesa singled home the winning run with two out in the bottom of the seventh to give Gilbert a 3-2 victory over Skyline. Michael Voight went 3-4 with three doubles for the Tigers, and Jacob Swift also had two hits. Josh Bies had an RBI as did Derek Marsh with a solo blast. Tyler Kamtz allowed two hits over four innings, with Kevin Hammann closing out and also getting the win.

Freshman Jake Peavyhouse got his first varsity home run as Pinnacle Defeated a tough Jenks, OK team 12-8. John Jones (grand slam) and Jonathon Crist also homered for the Pioneers. On the hill Ryan Makis got the win.


Bryan Karraker led off game two with a long ball and Pinnacle went on to defeat Stillwater, OK 13-9. Matt McCallister started and got the
victory.

Mountain View topped Basha 11-4. Matt Shannon got the win for the Toros, working 5 innings and allowing only 2 earned runs and 7 hits. Russ Tuemmler was 3-4 and had a key 3 run blast and a double to knock in 6 runs. Coltin White was 3-3.  Ryan Downs took the loss for Basha, but had 9 Ks in his 5 innings of work. Justin Sutherland was 2-2 for the Bears and Downs was 2-3 with a big fly.

Red Mountain edged Basha 9-8 in a 10 inning nail biter. Derek Wharton had a 2 run blast for RM.


Desert Vista jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and held on to beat Desert Mountain, 9-6. The Thunder had 7 hits in 1+ inning and were aided by 3 Desert Mountain errors. Jacob Brugman (2-3, 3R, 3RBI), Cole Pembroke (2-4, 2RBI), Ryan Box (2-3, RBI) and Sean Smedley (2-3) led Desert Vista, who also got four outstanding innings by Box in relief (no runs, no hits). The Wolves closed to 7-6 with 5 runs in the 3rd and 1 run in the 4th before Box entered the game. Tommy Rowland was also excellent in relief for Desert Mountain, pitching 5 innings and giving up just 1 earned run on 4 hits. Riley Welch pitched a shutout 7th. Lars Liguori (2-3, 2R), Matt Galterio (2-4, R, 2 RBI) led the Wolves.


Darian Johnson tossed a complete game and Chandler defeated Skyline 3-1. Markus Kalber knocked in a  pair of runs to key a 3 run Chandler had 2 RBIs for Chandler sixth.

Saguaro beat McClintock yesterday 5-4 in the region opener for both teams. Chase Watts drove in the game winner in the bottom of the 7th driving in Ryan Comford who walked and stole second. Saguaro got 2 RBI's each from Aaron Borenstein and Christian Lewis. Kurt Jahnke got the win in relief of Scott Zuloaga for the 'Cats, now 10-7 overall.


Senior lefty Matt Broderick continued his torrid pitching shuting out Quartz Hill, California for 5 solid innings. The shut out was completed by Tim Devito who pitched a scoreless 6th and 7th inning for the Eagles. Zack MacPhee went 3-3, and Brian Carr 3-4 for the Eagles in the win.
 

 


 

March 19, 2008

Basha beat the Westwood Warriors 11-1. Josh Alexander pitched a great game with only 1 earned run, 2 SO, 1 BB and 6 hits. Top hitters for the Bears were Eric Voak - 3 for 2 and 1 triple, Trevor Plautz 1 for 2 with a double, Josh Melendez 1 for 3, 2 RBI, Ryan Downs 1 for 4, 2 RBI's.


Desert Mountain scored 7 runs in the first inning and went on to beat Mesquite, 9-4, behind a complete game 3 hitter by Brad Douthit. Taylor Lindsey singled to start the game, Lance Harper was hit by a Chris Jensen pitch, Lars Liguori doubled home Lindsey, Kyle Smith hit a 2-run single and Skylar Helmbeck hit a 2-run bomb to right center as the Wolves plated 5 runs after 5 batters. Lindsey also had 2 sacrifice flies, Liguori was 2-4, Smith was 2-4, Matt Galterio was 2-3 with an RBI, and Douthit was 2-2 with a double and a walk as Desert Mountain totaled 12 hits. Douthit took a no-hitter into the sixth before allowing his first hit with two outs in the inning, finishing with 7 strikeouts and allowing no earned runs. Newman threw 3 shutout innings for Mesquite in relief.

O'Connor loses to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
The O'Connor Eagles were defeated by Broken Arrow, Oklahoma today 7-5 in the Eagles Invitational Tournament. Nick Carrillo was the started going 4 innings giving up only 3 earned runs. Carrillo was relieved by Aaron Copfer who pitched the last 2 innings. O'Connor committed 4 errors in the game. Carrillo hit his 4th Homerun of the season, going 3-4 at the plate. O'Connor managed only 7 hits in the game.

Tim Devito's single in the bottom of the 7th gave O'Connor a 6-5 come back win in the Eagles Invitational Tournament. Brian Carr was the starter only going 3 plus innings. He was relieved by Tyler Doolittle making his Varsity debut on the mound. Doolittle was superb in relief pitching 4 scoreless innings holding Highland Ranch to only 1 hit. Doolittle was the winning pitcher for the Eagles. The red hot Travis Lane 2-3, Brian Carr 2-2, and Tyler Doolittle 1-1, for O'Connor in the victory. The Eagles only had 6 hits in the game. In the 7th inning tied 5-5, Zack MacPhee led off with a walk. He was moved to second on a sacrafice bunt by Brian Carr, then scored on a solid single to center by Tim Devito. The Eagles dug out of a 5-2 deficit only to fight back and win the game.


Corona del Sol defeated the Raiders of Cibola 14-9, improving to 12-3 on the season. For Corona, Ryan Moore went 2/4 (3B, 4RBIs), Mike Felton 2/3 (2B, 3B), Chris Lopez 2/3, Kirby Pellant 3/5 and Justin Klett, Aaron Foshie and Tyler Giannonatti each chipped in doubles. Giannonatti got the win improving to 3-0. For Cibola, Leal went 2/2, Contrearus 2/5 (2B), Renteria 3/4 (HR, 2RBI).

O'Connor split a pair at the best of the West tourney:

O'Connor dumps Beggs, Oklahome 10-2
Freshman Kyle "Boomer" Slattery collected his first Varsity win defeating Begg, Oklahoma 10-2. He was relieved by Matt Bridgewater who made his Senior Year debut after returning from Knee surgery from a football injury. Nick Carrillo hit his 4th Homerun of the year collecting 4 RBI's. Tim Devito stayed red hot going 2-3, as did Garrett Brigdgewater and Devin Ethier. This was the Eagles 11th win in a row.


Game 2:
McAlester, Oklahoma defeats O'Connor.
In a slugfest, McAlester, Oklahoma defeated the O'Connor Eagles 14-11. Fresh off the injury list, Sophomore Bryce Keffeler was the starting pitcher and losing pitcher for the Eagles. He was relieved by Devin Ethier.Travis Lane and Tim Devito continued to hit the ball, Lane going 4-4, and Devito going 3-5 at the plate. Zack MacPHee went 2-2, Bryant Burnett 2-4, Nick Carrillo 2-4 for the Eagles.


Mesa Mountain View blanked Mesquite 6-0 behind the left arm of Austin Patience. Shane Urban had a pair of triples for MVT.

Desert Mountain split a double header on the first day of the Mesquite/Skyline tournament, beating Red Mountain 9-6 before losing to Gilbert, 13-3.

In the opener Kyle Smith was 4-4 including a double and a homer, driving in two runs and scoring three times as the Wolves avenged a loss last week to the Lions. Taylor Lindsey (2-5, RBI, R), Matt Galterio (2-3, 2 RBI, R), Skylar Helmbeck (1-1, RBI double), Brad Douthit (1-3, RBI) and Lars Liguori (double) led a balanced Wolves attack. Brian Foster (5 IP, 3 ER) picked up the win, with Tommy Rowland (1 ER, 3 H) earning the save with two solid innings. Dean Espy, Derek Mendoza, Mark Hawkenson and Derek Wharton each had 2 hits for the Lions. Mendoza was the losing pitcher for Red Mountain.

In the second game Gilbert used a strong outing from Michael Voight on the mound, timely hitting and a shaky Desert Mountain defense to beat the Wolves.
Voight scattered 5 hits and two earned runs in pitching a five inning complete game. Cody Repenning (3rd inning single), Voight (4th inning triple), and Braden Hamel (5th inning double) each had key two out, two strike, two RBI hits for the Tigers. Kenny Hatcher had a 3-run homer to end the game as Gilbert scored 7 unearned runs in the last inning. Lars Liguori was 2-3, and Kyle Smith, Skylar Helmbeck, Brad Douthit, Matt Galterio and Riley Welch each had hits for Desert Mountain.

Red Mountain took a 7-5 win over Desert Vista with Mark Jarrett earning the win on the mound. Dean Espy was 3-5 with a triple and 2 RBIs.

At the Cleats Invitational, Hamilton got a strong outing on the mound from Sammy Vandenheuval and defeated Chaparral 7-6. Cory bernard was 3-4 with a pair of steaks for the Huskies. Landon Joost cranked a 3 run shot for the 'birds.

Sunrise Mountain held off a late Pinnacle rally to claim a 9-7 win on Saturday. Woody Nisbett got the win on the mound. Sunrise jumped out to a 9-0 lead, thanks in large part to some defensive miscues by Pinnacle. The Pioneers stormed back, however, with homers from John Jones and Ash McCoy leading the way. Jones also had a pair of doubles for Pinnacle. Pinnacle left the bases loaded in the seventh.

Cactus Shadows moved to 9 and 5 on the season after winning a double header in the Spring Classic. The Falcons defeated Sunnyslope 17-7 in the first game and than defeated Prescott 16-8. Cactus Shadows hit 11 homeruns in the doubleheader. Chris Manship hit 3, Jake Goulder hit 2, Jackson Goulder hit 2, Steffen Miner hit 2, Chris Sabanosh hit 1, and Matt Sanger hit 1. Ismael Castro picked up 2 wins in relief.


In the first game of the 2008 Eagles Festival tournament, O'Connor defeated Montgomery Bell Academy of Nashville, Tennessee 4-0. Matt Broderick continues to impress, with 6 solid shut out inning. Nick Carrillo pitched a scoreless 7th inning to keep the shut out alive. Travis Lane remains red hot at the plate, belting his region leading 4th homerun of the season. Lane also was 2-3 . Nick Carrillo went 2-2, and Sophomore Tyler Doolittle collected his first Varsity hit. The win is the 10th in a row for O'Connor, and makes their record on the season 10-1-1.

In a battle of 2 of the state's top senior lefties, Chaparral's Danny Coulombe got the best of Ryan Carpenter and Cactus 4-2. Coulombe scattered 4 hits and had 15 Ks for the 'birds. Carpenter was solid in defeat, allowing only 8 hits. Royce Bolinger had a pair of double to lead the Chaparral attack.

On Friday Mesquite beat Desert Ridge in a slugfest 11-9 in 8 innings. Desert Ridge took a 1-0 lead after the first, but quickly surrendered it when Mesquite scored 8 runs in the 3rd getting a 2 run homer from Ty Forney and a 3 run homer from Austin Carr to chase sophomore starter Travis Flores who had not given up an earned run to start the season. Desert Ridge chipped away at the lead scoring 2 in the 3rd and 1 in the 5th on homeruns by Alex Villar and Steven Bier. Desert Ridge then tied the score with a 5 run 6th including a single from from Steven Bier off Chris Jensen who came on in relief of Casey Rana. The game stayed tied until the top of the 8th when Ty Forney lead off with a single, followed by a single by Chris Jensen and a double by Steven Harrignton to give Mesquite the lead for good. Harrignton has been on fire to start the season went 3-5 and is currently hitting .750 going 15-20. Ty Forney was 2-5 with a homer for Mesquite. While Steven Bier was 3-5 with a homer and Alex Villar was 2-3 with a homer for Desert Ridge. Nick Quiroz was 2-2 for Mesquite.
 


Mesa traveled to Yuma Friday to pound the Criminals 15-2. The Jackrabbits were led by Jordan Adair, who got the win with a complete game, scattering 3 hits and allowing just 2 runs(1earned). At the plate Adair was 2 for 3 with a double and 3 RBIs. Also having a big game for Mesa was Trey Paulsen who ended the day going 2 for 4, 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Other big contributors were: Ryne Hemstreet 2 for 4, 2 runs, Jessie Feininger, 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs and Marco Erran, 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.


Sunrise Mountain defeated  Horizon 3-2 in a classic battle of two top teams. Jaff Decker threw a complete game 4 hitter striking out 11 Huskies. Horizon scrapped a run in the top of the 1st inning after dedker had 2 wild pitches. AJ Robinson's 2 out double in the 1st inning scored Barreda and Nisbet to give the Mustangs an early lead. Jaff Decker added a triple in the 5th to score Vince Gillies. Decker didn't allow a base runner after the 5th inning and struck out 5 of the final 6 hitters he faced.


Aaron Altherr pitched a complete game in the Agua Fria's 7-3 win against Prescott Friday night. On Saturday the Owls won their game against Sunnyslope 10-8. Orlando Cano hit 2 shots and Joe Garcia hit a Grand Slam for Agua Fria.

The O'Connor Eagles defeated Prescott 15-7. Brian Carr was the starting pitcher and winning pitcher going 5 innings, striking out 7 for his 3rd win of the season. Carr was relieved by Devin Ethier in the 6th and Tim Devito in the 7th. Brian Carr went 3-4 at the plate with his 3rd homerun of the season and 5 RBI's. Travis Lane was 3-4 with his 3rd homerun of the season. It was a very good team effort for O'Connor with 17 hits, and excellent defense. Zack MacPhee, 2-5, Tim Devito 3-5, Bryant Burnett 2-3, and Nick Carrillo 2-4 banged out the hits for the Eagles. The win for O'Connor is their 9th in a row. The Badgers pounded out 13 hits of their own, led by Cam Schiller, who went 4-4 , and brother Skyler went 2-4. Alex Gift went 2-4 for the Badgers in the loss. William Hammock was the losing pitcher for Prescott.


Brad Douthit threw a complete game two-hitter, striking out 10 batters as Desert Mountain beat Centennial, 2-0. Kyle Smith had an RBI double in the first inning to give Douthit an early lead. Smith (2-3), Douthit (1-2), Colton Farnsworth (1-2, double) and Lance Harper (1-1) provided just enough offensive support as the Wolves improved their record to 10-2. Centennial's Michael Pomeroy pitched well in defeat, allowing 5 hits in 6-2/3 innings.


Notre Dame topped Ironwood 4-1 with Jordan Luvisi getting the win. Luvisi struck out 14 and allowed only 4 hits and the unearned run. Sean Lafferty had 3 RBIs including a 2 run blast for the Saints.


Marcos De Niza edged Corona del Sol 2-1. Trailing 1-0, Casey Maloney doubled in the tying run in the 5th inning. In the sixth, Mike Kenneth doubled and scored the game winner on a Rudy Jaramillo base knock. Jake Morales tossed a 3 hitter for the Padres. For Corona, Kevin Collinge was the hard luck loser, working 6 innings and allowing only 5 hits.


Saguaro dropped Mountain Pointe 5-1 with Matt Anderson tossing a complete game and scattering 4 hits. Devyn Thaut and Wes Smith both had 2 knocks and a pair of RBIs for the Sabercats.

Red Mountain's Derek Mendoza and Mark Hawkenson combined on a 4-hitter as the Lions beat Desert Mountain, 5-1. Red Mountain took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning on just one hit, using a leadoff walk, 2 Desert Mountain errors, a hit batsman, a sacrifice fly and a two out single by Dean Espy to take the lead. Mendoza added to the cushion with a home run leading off the fourth.

Lars Liguori pitched well in defeat, allowing one earned run on 2 hits in 3 innings. Riley Welch pitched the final 3 innings, giving up one run and one hit while striking out five. Kyle Smith was 3-3 for the Wolves, and Robert Neill had a single.


Junior Chris Wert and Sophomore Jordan Adair pulled double duty for visiting Mesa High as the Jackrabbits beat Goldwater 6-3. Wert was equally outstanding at the plate and on the hill, going 6 innings and holding the Bulldogs to 3 runs(2 earned), at the plate Wert was 2 for 4. Adair went 2 for 3 with a bases loaded triple and blasted a 2 run shot over the left field fence for 5 RBIs on the day. He then came on and pitched a scoreless 7th for the save.


Kevin Burbank tossed a complete game 6 hitter as Deer Valley defeated Pinnacle 11-1. The Skyhawks got home runs from Josh Dahl, Blaine Schmidt and Kory Willis. Schmidt went 2-3 at the dish. Ryan Makis took the loss for Pinnacle.


Mtn Ridge beat Tolleson yesterday by the score of 12 to 4 Ryan Skube and Kyle Stiner both went deep for the Mtn Lions. Mike Vetter got the win, and Corey Cole threw 2 scoreless innings. Aaron Hines led the Mtn Lions at the plate going 4 for 4.


Horizon's Joey Danner, Nathan Mueller and Ryan Schwenn combined to limit Hamilton to 6 hits in a 5-3 victory under the lights at Chandler-Gilbert CC. Colby Everett was 2-3 for Horizon. Hamilton jumped out to an early 1-0 first inning lead after a laser beam blast off the scoreboard in left by Matt Helm. Horizon rallied for 3 off Helm in the 3rd to take the lead and never trailed again.


At the McClintock tournament, Corona jumped out to a 10-0 first inning lead and cruised to a 21-5 win over McClintock. The Aztecs later dropped Ironwood 12-5.


The Prescott Badgers pulled out another win, this time  over Sunnyslope 3-1. Richard Schleicher pitched 5 strong innings to collect the win. Prescott had RBI base hits from Matt Kelley, Willie Hammack and Zach Haley.  Freshman lefty Michael Howard tossed two solid innings in relief , pushing the Badger record to 10-0.

 In the Saguaro tourney, Corona put together a 4 run rally with 2 outs in the top of the 7th to break a 3-3 and propel the Aztecs to a 7-3 win over Saguaro. For Corona, Evan Ritchey went 2 for 3 (HR, 3RBI), Trevor Allen 3/4 (2 doubles, 3B, 2RBI), Justin Klett 2/3 (3B, 2RBI) and Ryan Moore 2/3 (2B) Tyler Giannonatti started for Corona, but Kirby Pellant pitched two scoreless innings in relief and got the win. Scott Zuloaga threw  6 strong innings for the Sabercats. Chase watts and Wes Smith each had 2 hits for Saguaro.

Andrew Walter tossed a complete game no hitter with 11 Ks, allowing one unearned run, as Cactus opened region play with a 5-1 win over Peoria. Walter also had 2 hits for the Cobras, along with Bo Cuthbertson, Casey Collins and Eric Goetz.

Alex Moreno blasted an 8th inning HR to break a 4-4 tie and give the Padres the win over Notre Dame Prep Saint. Jacob Morales pitched 7 strong innings and Ben Dorman pitched the 8th to preserve the win for Marcos.


Chaparral defeated Cactus Shadows in 5 innings 20-1. Matt Summers pitched 4 innings giving up 2 hits and 1 run with 6 strikeouts.
Chris Evans pitched the final frame for the birds.
The Firebirds pounded out 20 hits. They were led by Tommy White who was 2 for 3. Royce Bolinger was 2 for 4 (1 Double) with 6 RBI's.
Cody Yount went 3 for 4 with a HR and 3 RBI's. Ernesto Ortiz went 3 for 4 (1 Double) and 3 RBI's
Trey Ford went 4 for 4  (2 Doubles) and 2 RBI'S


O'Connor defeated Flowing Wells 10-1. Brian Carr was the starter and winning pitcher for O'Connor going 5 innings giving up one run. He was relieved by Tim Devito and Nick Carrillo for a scoreless 6th and 7th inning. Bryant Burnett hit his first home run of the season, and Tim Devito went 3-4 at the dish for the Eagles. Artie Carrera was the starter and losing pitcher for The Flowing Wells Caballeros.


Colton Zebe  and James Pazos  went back to back to key a 4 run 7th inning that lifted HIghland to a 6-5 win over North Canyon. Jeremy Blare picked up the win in relief. Jaime Garrido, Blair Whatcott and Zebe all had multi hit games.


Mountain Pointe dropped McClintock 8-4 in the McClintock/Saguaro tourney. Jordan Madison pitched 2 scoreless in relief to earn the win.

Four Desert Mountain pitchers combined on a one-hitter, and the Wolves pounded out 12 hits in beating Westview, 16-0 in five innings. Bryce Hashimoto (2-3, 4 RBI's) had a bases clearing double and Kyle Smith (2-3, 3 RBI's, 2R) homered and doubled to lead the Wolves. Robert Neill (2-2, 2 RBI's, 2R), Tyler Pretzlaff (1-2, 2BB, 3R), Riley Welch (1-2, RBI double, 2R), Tommy Rowland (1-3, RBI, R), Skylar Helmbeck (1-1, RBI, R) Colton Farnsworth (1-2, R) and Lars Liguori (1-2, R, RBI double) also contributed to the Wolves attack. Cam Teich got the win on the mound, with Brian Foster, Ross Prejean and Rowland each throwing perfect innings.


Corona Del Sol opened the Spring Break tournament with a big win over out-manned Central, 15-1.  There was no let down from the win over Brophy the night before.  Coach Webb decided to start primarily reserves and gave virtually every Corona player action in the game.  Chris Lopez got the win pitching 3 innings and yielding Central's only run.  Sophomore Austin Doll pitched the 4th and 5th, showing a crisp fastball and K'd 4.  Corona pounded out 15 hits in 4 innings, with just about everyone getting in on the action.  Marshall Gottlieb doubled and tripled for Corona.

Sunrise Mountain topped Hamilton 8-2 on Friday afternoon. Sunrise opened the game with a 3 run homer by AJ Robinson in the 1st and Gilbert Galindo added a second inning 2 run blast off Hamilton starter Sam Ebersole and the Mustangs never looked back. Jaff Decker threw 6 solid innings allowing only 4 hits and 1 run. Mike Burrolla came in relief to close out the Huskies in the 7th.


Junior righty Kevin Collinge scattered six hits in a complete game effort as Corona Del Sol handed Brophy a 7-1 loss on Friday afternoon. The Aztecs had a trio of 2 run taters off Bronco starter Drew Maggi by juniors Chris Lopez, Kirby Pellant and Evan Ritchey ( his 1st varsity hit). Ryan Moore and Trevor Allen each had 2 hits for CDS. Kasey Coffman was 2-3 with a double for Brophy.


In a match up of two of the state's top 4A1 contenders, Chaparral edged Catalina Foothills 2-1. Foothills took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, scoring an unearned run on an 2 out infield error. Chap knotted things in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Royce Bolinger. With the score tied at one in the bottom of the seventh, Matt Summers reached on an error, stole second, and advanced to 3rd when David Roney reached on a dropped third strike. With Jordan Weymouth at the plate, Roney was promptly picked off first, but was heady enough to keep the play alive in a run down. Summers broke from third and scored the game winner on a  head first slide. Chap's Chase Brewer and Foothills' Kayvon Bahramzadeh both were very solid in complete game efforts. Brewer scattered 7 hits and Kayvon allowed only 3 in taking the loss. Breck Ashdown had a pair of hits for the Falcons.

Kory Willis tossed a complete game and the Deer Valley offense continued to roll as the 'hawks took a 10-3 win over Trevor Browne. Trevor jumped out an early 2-0 lead due to a Mario Parra blast with a runner on. The Bruins led 3-2 going into the 6th when the DV offense exploded for 8 runs, capped off by a grand slam by sophomore Kyle Herrington. Willis also went 2-3 at the plate with a double and a triple.


Prescott defeated Coconino 12-2 in 5 innings. The Badgers tallied  12 hits and 10 runs to chase Kyle Lobstein in the 4th inning.  Cam Schiller  led the Prescott offense with 3 hits, Sky Schiller had 2 hits, Alex Gift had a double and a 5th inning homer. Sophomore Lefty Andy Roberts went 4 innings for the win.


Mesquite defeated Dobson 8-1. Casey Rana improved his record to (3-0) on the year, pitching 6 strong innings before Zack Davies came in to close.  Mesquite's leading hitters were Steven Harrington (3-4), Ty Forney (3-4), Rocky High(2-3) with a double and a 3 run homerun. Austin Carr was also 2-4. Mesquite had 16 hits as a team and improved it’s team record to (6-2) on the year.


 Sunnyslope's Dylan Hanna had a no hitter through 6 2/3 innings before a flare single into right center ended the no-no bid. Hanna finished with a complete game one  hitter and drove in Slope's only two runs in a 2-0 win. He was one hit and one error from a perfect game.


In a battle of unbeatens, Basha scored 3 unearned runs in the first on 3 errors by Desert Ridge and held on for a 3-2 win. Basha pitcher Matt Powell was effective allowing only 3 hits. He gave up 2 runs in the 6th on a bases loaded single by Steven Bier. Desert Ridge sophomore pitcher Travis Flores gave up 3 unearned runs and allowed only 2 hits pitching a complete game on 76 pitches.

Desert Mountain exploded for 8 runs in the 2nd inning on their way to a 14-3 win over Corona del Sol in 5 innings on Thursday. Eight Desert Mountain hitters had at least one RBI by the end of the 2nd inning, and Brad Douthit finished the game with four shutout innings to earn the win. After the Aztecs opened the game with 3 runs in the top of the 1st, the Wolves scored in all four at-bats as they totaled 12 hits. Lars Liguori had a tie-breaking homer in the 2nd, Robert Neill had a two-run double, Cam Boysen a two-run single, Taylor Lindsey an RBI single and Lance Harper an RBI triple in the inning. Lindsey was on base all 4 times for the Wolves (2-2, BB, HBP, 3R), Harper was 2-3 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored, Neill was 2-3 with 2 RBI's, Douthit had an RBI single and Colton Farnsworth was 2-3 with an RBI for Desert Mountain. The Wolves recorded their 7th straight win to run their season record to 8-1.

Kirby Pellant, Mike Felton and Tyler Giannonatti had two hits, and Justin Klett added another for Corona del Sol.


Ryan Jones tossed a complete game 6 hitter, allowing only one earned run and striking  out 12 as Sunnyslope edged Moon Valley 5-4. John Capriotti got the game winning knock in the bottom of the seventh for the Vikes. Sophomore Blake Freeman had 2 RBIs for 'slope.

Basha scored 11 runs in the final 3 innings to come back and edge Mesa 15-14 in a shootout. Josh Melendez led Basha at the plate going 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs including the game winning hit in the bottom of the 7th. Melendez also pitched 4 innings of relief. For Mesa, Jordan Adair threw 5 innings and went 2 for 5 with 4 RBIs including a 2 run home run to left field, Trey Paulsen also added a bases clearing double for Mesa.


In a 6 inning mercy rule game the O'Connor Eagles shut out Independence 15-0. Senior lefthander Matt Broderick was superb giving up 1 hit and striking out 12 Independence batters in 5 innings. Devin Ethier struck out 2 in the 6th giving Eagles pitchers 14 strike outs in 6 innings of play. Brian Carr, Travis Lane, and Nick Carrillo all hit homeruns for the Eagles. Matt Witwer continued his hot hitting going 3-4, Bryant Burnett 2-2, Brian Carr went 3-5. Rick Byler and twin brother Nick Byler got his first varsity hit, both RBI singles. Nick Carrillo went 2-3, Travis Lane 2-2 in the victory.


The Arcadia Varsity Titans are now 6-2 on the season after this week, outscoring Moon Valley and Saguaro by a combined score of 31-7.


Sophomore Jake Waldren pitched a 4 hit, seven inning complete game as Mountain Pointe defeated Alhambra 5-1. Waldren moved to 3-0 on the season striking out 5 and allowing no earned runs.  CJ Cron was 2-3 with a Home Run. Erik Klem was 2-3 with 2 RBI's. Derek McCawley was 2-3 with a double and Nick Lira doubled for the Pride.



Ryan Carpenter allowed only one hit and had 16 Ks as Cactus topped Flagstaff by the score of 6-0.

Deer Valley steamrolled Ironwood 20-0 with Jimmy Goad getting the win on the mound. Blaine Schmidt was 4-5 with 3 doubles and a triple Daniel Schneider was 2-2 with a homer, a double ,a base on balls and a hit by pitch.


Desert Ridge edged Trevor Browne 6-5 in 8 innings. D.W. Warner knocked in the game winner . Jake Barrett's 2 run blast was his 4th in the last 3 games. Barrett was 2-2 with a HR and 3 RBI, and Jerry Klemen was 2-4 for the Jags. For Trevor, Sergio Burruel was 2-3 with a homer and 4 RBI.



On Tuesday, Corona del Sol defeated the Boulder Creek Jags 4-1 in non-region competition. The effort was a final tune-up for Corona before two big contests with Desert Mountain and Brophy later this week. Tyler Giannonatti got the win, scattering four hits in a complete game.
Ryan Imming took the loss, despite holding the Aztecs to just 4 hits. However, 4 walks and some timely base running were enough for the Orange men. Mike Felton had two singles, Ryan Moore and Trevor Allen one each.

Jake Barrett tossed a complete game and had a pair of homers as Desert Ridge defeated Highland 6-2 on Wednesday. Barrett, after allowing a first inning solo homer to Colton Zebe, settled in to toss 5 shutout innings. The Hawks scraped a pair runs out in the seventh.Highland's James Pazos was solid in his first extended outing of the spring, and trailed 2-1 through 5 innings before the Jags tallied twice in the sixth.  Steve Bier added a big fly for DR.

On Tuesday night, Tucson Sabino handed Catalina Foothills their first loss of the season 6-3. Jake Hanson homered and Justin Zumwalde had a 2 run double.


Also on Tuesday night, Horizon handed Mesa Mountain View their first loss of the season 3-2. Conner Hulse went 6 1/3 innings for the win.

Ryan Jones was 3-3 with a 3 run HR, a double and 5 RBIs as Sunnyslope defeated Moon Valley 13-2.


Desert Vista rallied back from a 7-0 deficit to defeat Brophy 10-8 at DV. Jaycob Brugman got the win in relief. Junior Ryan Box sparked the comeback with a pair of 2 run homers. Patrick Hickey also went deep for DV. For Brophy, Cullen Mahoney had a bomb.

Brophy's  biggest loss occurred in the first inning, when OF/ RHP Harlyn Griffiths, running out a ground ball, suffered a broken ankle and is reportedly now lost for the season.

Mesquite defeated Marcos de Niza 3-2. Chris Jensen (2-1) threw a complete game giving up 6 hits. Rudy Jaramillo
took the hard luck loss. Leading hitters were Ty Forney (3-3) 2 doubles, Bo Delis (2-3) with the game winning hit in the bottom of the seventh inng, and Steven Harrington (2-3) who is now 8 for 9 on the year. Mesquite record (5-2) Marcos (4-3). Jaramillo had 8 strikeouts giving up 9 hits.
 


Kevin Burbank tossed a complete game six hit shutout as Deer Valley blanked Mountain Ridge 8-0. Daniel Schneider homered for the 'hawks. Chris Capper, Johnny Maldonado, Blaine Schmidt and Burbank all had 2 hit games.


Chandler defeated the hosting Lions of Alhambra by a score of 9-1. Michael Handel got the win, going 5 1/3 innings giving up one run (unearned). He also had a big day at the plate going 2-3. Younger brother Mackenzie Handel went 2-4 with 4 RBIs. Jonathan Burnham took the loss for Alhambra. Look for a good one Friday at Chandler's Austin Field as they welcome the defending state champ Horizon Huskies.


O'Connor defeated a stubborn Mingus team 4-3 behind Nick Carrillo's 5 shut out inning, 1 hit performance. Timmy Devito got his first save of the year pitching a scoreless 7th inning for the Eagles. Devito also went 2-3 at the plate, as did Bryant Burnett. Mingus starter Tony Vocca held the Eagles in check for 3 innings before the Eagles put 4 runs on the board in the 4th inning. Justin Shultz went 2-3 for Mingus in the loss.


Pitching was again the theme for the Queen Creek Bulldogs (3-2, 1-0). Three QC pitchers combined to give up 0 earned runs (3 unearned) in a 12-3 win over visiting Flagstaff Sinagua. This was the third consecutive game that the QC staff didn't give up an earned run. An awesome testament to a staff that has worked hard. Alonzo Martin (2-1) went 5 strong innings, giving up 5 hits, 1 BB and 6 Ks. Victor DeAnda and T.J. Johnson each added an inning of shutout ball on the bump. The Dogs had 9 players record at least one hit, with Josh Fultz (3-4, 2 2B, 2 Runs and 4 RBI) and Martin (3-4, 2 2B) leading the way.


The Greenway Demons took care of business Tuesday against Dysart 18-8 in 5 innings.  Michael Martinez and Kevin Miller combined for the win on the mound.  Andrew Ray was 2-2 with two doubles and 2 walks, 4 runs scored, 3 RBI's.  Brandon Coleman got 4 free passes.  Zack Williams went 2-3 with a triple and 2 RBI's, Ryan Harper added a hit, and both freshman Jorge Ozuna and Senior Michael Gartner chipped in with two knocks each and 6 RBI's.  A huge TEAM win for the Demons, everyone played a role.  Kudos for a strong performance after a tough 4-3 extra innings loss on Monday at Mingus.


The Basha Bears beat Tucson Salpointe 4-1. Ryan Downs moved to 3-0 on the year going 6 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run with 10 Ks. Downs was also 1-3 with an RBI, Mike Benjamin was 1-2 with a triple, Kyle Roessler was 2-3. Salopointe's Jacob Hunter was 2-3 in the loss.


Junior Ash McCoy’s return to the Pinnacle lineup was a successful one as they defeated Camelback 11-1. McCoy was 2-2, John Jones, Dean Symancyck and Tyler Krause all had multiple hit games. Ryan Makis went the distance giving up 1 run in the final frame. Lou Mcanany took the loss for Camelback.


 Chaparral defeated Cactus Shadows 3-0. Danny Coloumbe pitched a complete game shutout allowing only 3 hits. Coloumbe struck out 12 Falcon hitters. Chaparral scored one in the bottom half of the 5th on a wild pitch. Trey Ford went 1 for 1 driving in 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth.


 The Prescott Badgers are now 8-0 after defeating Apollo 6-5 on Monday and Notre Dame 6-4 yesterday on a 3 run walk-off HR by Richard Schliecher. The Badgers went 5-0 in the McClintock tourney with wins over McClintock (15-2) and Notre Dame (4-3).


Desert Mountain held off a 7th inning rally by Cesar Chavez to record a 6-5 victory over the Champions. Riley Welch came in to strike out the final batter on 3 pitches to preserve the victory for Lars Liguori, who pitched 6 strong innings for the Wolves. Liguori allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, striking out five and walking none.

The Wolves moved out to a 6-2 lead despite failing to capitalize on several good scoring opportunities during the game. Taylor Lindsey was 3-4, with an RBI triple, Skylar Helmbeck was 3-4 with 2-RBI's, and Tommy Rowland had a key 2-out RBI double in the 7th to score what proved to be the winning run.

Danny Victorio was 3-4 with 2 doubles for Cesar Chavez. Jesus Carlos threw 6-2/3 innings, pitching out of several jams for the Champions.


A 7 run fourth inning proved to be the difference as Hamilton dropped Mountain Pointe 10-1. Kyle Peterson was 2-4 with a homer, triple and 4 RBIs. Matt Helm threw 6 innings for the win.

The Queen Creek Bulldogs (2-2, 1-0) took their region opener, 4-1 against new East Sky Region member school, Seton Catholic (0-6, 0-1). The Dogs had another wonderful pitching outing, this time by Travis Eggert. Eggert (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, going 5 innings and giving up one unearned run on 6 hits while recording 4 Ks and 0 BB. Matt Schmit picked up the save with 2 innings of relief. Alonzo Martin was the leader offensively, going 4-4 with a 2B and a run. Josh Fultz added 2 hits while scoring a run and getting an rbi.

In a classic battle between two neighborhood rivals in the championship game of the Scottsdale Quarterback Club Tournament, Desert Mountain held off two late rallies by Chaparral to beat the Firebirds 11-10. Lars Liguori's bases loaded triple broke a 7-7 tie in the top of the 5th as the Wolves moved out to an 11-7 lead. But Chaparral plated 3 runs on 5 hits in the bottom of the 6th, and had the tying run thrown out at the plate on a tremendous throw by center fielder Matt Galterio to end the inning. Then in the 7th inning Wolves reliever Cam Teich recorded the final two outs with the tying run on second base to save the win for Brian Foster. Foster went 3-1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits.
Skylar Helmbeck led the 13 hit Wolves attack, going 3-4 with a 2nd inning grand slam. He also had two RBI singles to total six RBI's on the day. Taylor Lindsey was 2-4 and Kyle Smith was 2-4 with 2 runs scored as 8 different Desert Mountain hitters recorded at least one hit.
Matt Summers had a 2-run homer for Chaparral, and Danny Coulombe and Cody Yount both had doubles for the Firebirds.


Mesa continued their hot hitting beating Higley 9-3 in a consolation game at the Scottsdale Quarterback Club Tournament.

Soph. Jordan Adair went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and pitched two innings in relief. Senior Scott Valdez pitched four innings in the start, allowing no runs on two hits with three strikeouts. Juniors Jesse Feininger had a double and a triple and Chris Wert added a 2 rbi double for the Jackrabbits . Jeff Aguilar went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Knights.


Mesquite took a pair of game on Saturday in the Scottsdale QB Club tourney.

The 'cats beat Higley 12-4 with Austin Carr getting the win on the mound. Steven Harrington was 2-2 at the plate

Later, Mesquite hammered Saguaro 12-2 with Rocky High going the distance for the win with 0 earned runs and going 3-4 with a triple and double. Steven Harrington was 4-4.


Due to the SAT's O'Connor played Skyline without 5 of their starters and defeated Skyline 14-13 on a strike three passed ball, scoring Maverick Lasker from third. Brian Carr went 3-4 for O'Connor with his first home run of the season. Zack MacPhee and Matt Witwer went 2-4 for the Eagles in the win. Trevor Benjamin and Kyle Pitryga homered for Skyline. Blaze Estrada went 2-4 for Skyline.


Corona claimed the CDS-Westwood title with a 7-0 win over Westwood. Kevin Collinge threw 4 shutout innings for the win. Kirby Pellant was 3-4 with a triple and Mike felton had a pair of hits for the Aztecs.


Mesa Mountain View run ruled Hamilton 14-4 in six innings. The Toros jumped out to a 9-0 2nd inning lead and crusied from there. The Toros played long ball, with Tim Willsey, Shane Urban and Gus Monteverde all hitting big flies. Matt Shannon was 3-4 at the dish. Austin Patience earned the win for MVT.


Sunrise Mountain took home the hardware at the Cactus Classic in Tucson. The Mustangs defeated Riverside High from El Paso in the championship 11-0. Jaff Decker, led off the game with a homer and later added a 6th inning 3 run bomb for good measure.

 

In the semis, SM dropped a scrappy San Luis team 3-2.  Decker went the distance on the hill allowing zero earned runs, escaping a bases loaded jam in the 6th and striking out a batter for the last out with bags juiced in the 7th to seal the win.

Desert Mountain used an eight-run 2nd inning, which included a 2-run homer by Matt Galterio and a 3-run homer by Lance Harper, to defeat Chandler 10-6 on Friday.  Brad Douthit led Desert Mountain at the plate and on the mound, going 3-3 with 2 RBI's and pitching 5 innings to earn the win.  Douthit  allowed 4 runs on 6 hits while striking out six.  Lars Liguori was 2-4 with a run scoring triple, Cam Boysen was 2-3, Skylar Helmbeck had an RBI double and Taylor Lindsey was on base 3 times (1 hit, 2 wallks) and had a sacrifice fly.  Colton Farnsworth had two outstanding plays at third base and was on base twice.  Ross Prejean pitched the final two innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits.

Darian Johnson had a 2-run homer for Chandler and Michael Morales was 2-4.


Chase Brewer tossed 4 strong innings with 5 Ks, moving to 2-0 on the season, as Chaparral dropped Mountain Pointe 12-1 in the Scottsdale QB Club tourney. Tommy White was 3-3 with a pair of double, Jordan Weymouth, Matt Summers and Royce Bolinger all had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.

Mesa jumped on Tucson in their Scottsdale Quarterback Club game with 10 hits and 12 runs. The Jackrabbits were led by Senior Dillon Downs with a 2 run bomb to right center, Downs finished 1 for 2, 2 rbi and a BB. Also, producing at the plate for Mesa was:

On Thursday, O'Connor defeated Greenway 21-5 in a 5 inning mercy rule game. Freshman Kyle "Boomer" Slattery got the start and went 2 innings, not for a few defensive miscues, Slattery would of escaped without any runs given up. Slattery was relieved by Devin Ethier who pitched 3 scoreless innings, giving up 1 hit. Nick Carrillo continued his torrid hitting going 3-3 for the second consecutive game, and belting his 1st home run of the season. Maverick Lasker followed with his 2nd homerun of the year. Brian Carr went 2-3 with 2 doubles, Travis Lane 2-3, and Matt Witwer 2-3. Witwer got his first varsity hit in the game. Andrew Ray got 2 hits for the Greenway Demons in the loss.


Corona grinded their way to a 5-4 win over Mountain Ridge at the Aztec Classic. Ryan Moore, Mike Felton and Trevor Allen all had 2 hits. Ridge scored all 4 runs on homers, a 3 run shot by Parker Markel  and a solo blast by Kyle Stiner. Juniors Markel and Brock Abadinni both had nice outings on the hill, matching up for 3 scoreless frames to start the game. Sophomore Greg Ryan got the win in relief for CDS.

In a classic battle of left handed pitchers, O'Connor ,behind Brian Carr's 5 shut out innings defeated Deer Valley and Kevin Burbank 4-0. The game was 0-0 going into the fourth inning when Travis Lane uncorked his first homerun of the season to put the Eagles up 2-0. The Eagles then added 2 more runs when Zack MacPhee went yard in the 5th inning. Both MacPhee and Lane went 3-3 for the Eagles. Carr was relieved by first time Varsity player Aaron Copfer who pitched a scoreless 6,and the game was closed out by a scoreless 7th inning by Nick Carrillo. Johnny Maldonado went 2-4 for the Skyhawks in the loss.


Mountain Pointe opened their regular season with a 7-3 victory at Desert Mountain on Thursday. Nick Lira hit a two run double with two outs in the 3rd to break a 2-2 tie after the Wolves committed two errors.
The Pride then added to their lead with a two out, 3-run bomb by Derick McCawley in the top of the 7th. The Wolves battled back in the bottom of the 7th on an RBI single by Skylar Helmbeck but their rally fell short.

Ryan Klem got the win for Mountain Pointe, giving up one earned run on 4 hits while striking out 7 in four innings. Jake Dziubczynski pitched the final 3 innings, giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits. Brad Douthit pitched well in the loss, giving up 1 earned run on 6 hits during his six innings on the mound. Lance Harper had an RBI double, Matt Galterio was 2-4 and Helmbeck was 2-3 for the Wolves.
